Dear Oklahoma

DAY 0 of SXSW TRIP - 12:38 AM

Ok. So we left for the fair city of Austin, TX this morning, traveling across the country simultaneously with hundreds of other web nerds. It's been a rough week at Neubix - deadlines for work and for my SXSW panel kept me and Brad from getting too few hours of sleep. Last night we'd had 4 hours of combined sleep coming off of 24 hours straight at work. That's the setup.

Our trip from the humble city of Springfield to Austin, TX was supposed to take 10-12 hours. We leave at 11:00AM with the hopes of arriving between 9:00 - 11:00 PM. Now it is 12:38AM and we are just outside Dallas, still 2 hours from our destination. Thank you, Oklahoma. You put me in a bad bad mood. Road work is the pits. I wrote you a letter...

Dear Oklahoma,

You are desolate, barren and downright ugly. Of the three states we've traveled through today, your highways are the worst. As if it's not enough that your roads suck, you penalize me $3.50 every 50 miles to use them. Your wind is really windy and that upsets me a great deal. Take the money I give you for your roads and spend it elsewhere (since it's obviously not finding its way back to the highway system). Maybe invest in some mountains. Real big ones. The positive effects of said investment would be at least threefold: (a) travelers would not be bored to tears while passing through (b) I could justify spending $3.50 at a toll both that advertises its dues help fund mountain erection and (c) your winds would be less formidable.

Oklahoma, I'm not upset - I'm just disappointed. You have a college called ORAL Roberts for crying out loud. I respect you for that. And we all know what Tulsa spelled backwards is. I can't even imagine how many jokes you've endured for that unfortunate sequence of letters. But alas, you are still on my bad list right now. I just wanna go to SXSW. Please let me leave you.

Sincerely,
Ryan Sims

Here we go again!! A new round of why Oklahoma sucks!! Thank you for bringing this link back, it's been too long since I had a place to rant about the desparity, lack of common sense, poor living standards and hypocritical bible thumpers down there.

Latest news about good old Okie…they rank #2 in the nation in number of stroke victims….why, you might ask??? According to the Daily Oklahomo..it's because of all the people down there being so fat, smoking excessively and just generally living a poor lifestyle……

Gee…too fat?? Will wonders never cease…..maybe if they actually stayed away from places like Sonic, and all the other junk food places, they'd be better off..ya think??

Oh yeah..one more biggie…a couple years ago…when the "low carb" craze was in full swing…a burger chain down there introduced the "low carb burger"….it was a burger..piled high with all the crap they like on burgers down in Okie….including the nice deep fried onion ring they add as the coup de grace to artery clogging bliss..minus the bun…..would you like to supersize your mayo with that???

first off let me clear up a few things!!! i am from oklahokma tulsa to be exact. and you know what oklahoma does suck. tulsa sucks even worse!. the entire state whether it be court, politics, city officials, you name it. are pretty much crooked! everything here is a joke! and your right about our roads their garbage. hell we have a lottery that makes millions upon millions. and is supposed to be going torward education. look at our schools and tell me if it looks liketheir getting any money? leaking ceilings , no ac, crappy school lunches. these kids havent seen a dime of it and its been a year. but what got my attention was the comment about strokes? well im 36 yrs of age. i had a heat attack and a stroke in the same day. and i eat right , try to stay healthy. but mine is also heriditary and cant be fixed. just controlled. this was 3 weeks ago. but oklahoma and i warning to anyone moving here, please, please reconsider. if someone gave me the means to move . i would be out of here. i mean you can tell when you cross a state line without even seeing a sign. and anywhere ive been is simply beautiful compared to here. oklahoma is not a place you want to come believe me. i wish every day to get my family out of here. everything here is a lie!!!!!!

I was in Tulsa once..over at the Army Corps of Engineers headquarters building..whatever magnificent road that was they call an interstate there in Okie-Dokey land, I'm told it was under construction for the past year or more and was still under reconstruction when I left Okie(dogpatch) a year later….

News report in the Daily Oklahomo tonight…seems the federal govt is coughing up 340 million in the next 5 years for bridge work in that so called state, and apparently the money is already earmarked for bridges leading OUT of the state, none of the internal bridges are going to be improved…is this an attempt to make sure that the mass exodus of yokels leaving Okie is safe to get out??

To Derron eberhard..I sympathize with your plight of not being able to leave that "state(??)"….Maybe make a midnight run for the state line and hope somebody else getting out takes sympathy and gives you a lift….leave all your Okie possessions cause they probably won't be worth a crap anyway in the real world….not busting on ya, you know what I mean…as long as you've got the clothes on your back you've got more on the outside than you do with a house full of crap there in Dogpatch….

OKLAHOMA SCORES BIG AGAIN!!! (In a bad, bad way!!)

The latest MSN rankings for the worst cities for skin cancer came out today, a "top 100" places to avoid so to speak, ranking #1 was the least likely place to get skin cancer and the higher the number, the greater the risk…lo and behold, Oklahoma scores twice in there, both with high numbers….

Tulsa ranked #90 with a D-

Oklahomo City ranked #81 with a D.

Every city listed in Texas scored better, even though they're all farther south.

Oklahomo, you suck big time and your situation is failing to improve..somebody do this great country a favor a declare the state a permanent disaster area, will ya??? Maybe we can give the land back to the Mexican government or just make the state the "landfill" for the rest of the country…oh wait, it's that already….

Paul

7 Jun 07 at 7:03am

Still ANOTHER poor finish for Oklahomo!!

This one for worst drivers. Out of the top 100 cities with the worst drivers, number 1 being the least worst(?) and number 100 being the absolute worst, Oklahomo City ranks # 74 and Tulsa ranks #65.

Take heart Okie Homo City, there are 26 cities in worse shape than you are, but remember, there are 73 that are better,,,,your rating for this particular report..a whopping D+ !!

Aren't you guys glad you live in a place like that???

Somebody drive by The Ford Center tomorrow and say hello for me, will ya?? Try not to have an accident along the way….

Paul

8 Jun 07 at 6:49pm

Just FYI…even NYC, a city of what, 11 million or so(about 2.5 times the entire population of your brokeback state) comes in at number 3, rating an A+…you people are pathetic losers in every sense of the word.

Stay tuned……

I'm struck by one theme that seems to pervade almost every topic you see posted about Oklahomo…we will survive. Amazing that in this day and age, the first and foremost thought on Okies minds is survival…be it from tornados, drought, freezing temps, the lead mine debacle and many others. Even when you see an article about Oklahomo stating how good things are, there's always that little tag line that mentions the word "but".

The Miss Belvedere joke in Tulsa made Tulsa, and Oklahoma the laughing stock of the country, to everybody except Oklahomans, who just didn't seem to get it. here they bask in the glory of unearthing a car thats been submerged for God knows how long of a 50 year drenching, make a party out of it, and then make stupid comments about how the rusted heap "embodies the spirit of Tulsa"..how does it??? By showing that the idiots can't get it right?? By showing that the image of Tulsa is the same as a car whose ignition switch was rusted and rotted completely away? By showing that the idiots had no clue how to make a small vault waterproof, not just to stop some condensation from forming, but to in effect build a below ground pool and then drop a car into it and hope it survived?? You could have left that car above ground for 50 years out in the weather and taken a chance on a tornado not picking it up and it would have fared better…but you idiots had to make a scene, and then act proud that there was even a hulk resembling a car left in there…what does that say for the "spirit of Oklahoma"??

Your spirit sucks, you are the most misinformed and backwoods yokels to survive in this country today and it's amazing that you live where you do, because if you lived in anyplace that actually made you types rely on common sense then you'd surely be terminated as an act of mercy on your pathetic souls….

Stay there in Oklahoma, you people deserve each other and the crappy land that is your state….

1 Jul 07 at 7:01am

Which committee of you Okie idiots designed the building of lakes down there for flood control?? It sure as hell ain't working is it?? Isn't it typhoid that comes as a disease from flooding and the like?? Maybe there is hope for eliminating the populace of that land yet..

On another bright note..Okie makes the headlines once again, both OKC and Tulsa..listed as one of the worst places in the country for being out of shape and having the worst abs…you people kill me..but not as fast as you kill yourselves by stuffing all that Sonic/fast food et al crap(ask me what "et al" means if you're too stupid to know) and maybe try eating fresh veggies and food thats not deep fried..

Paul

3 Jul 07 at 4:05am

Here we go once again..an oil spill estimated at 42,000 gallons is headed for Oologah Lake, which just so happens to supply the city of Tulsa with it's drinking water.

According to the Daily Oklahomo, a chopper has gone to see if the spill has reached the lake yet, "but it's ok, because it's still 5 or 6 miles away" they reported…

Hey Morons !! Why not try something smart like calling an environmental outfit to get those things called spill containment booms to stop it from getting to the lake?? Perhaps you've heard of those booms, they've only been around for about 30 years or more…

NO mention of trying to stop it from reaching the lake, or of efforts to clean it up, just take a happy chopper ride and report all clear because it hasn't hit the lake yet…

La Dee Dah…we're just in a stupified bliss down here in Okie Dokie Land….guess drinking water isn't a big deal to you yokels since you mainly drink Dr Pepper and crap from Sonic anyway…..

Paul

3 Jul 07 at 5:45pm

oklahoma is shit. I don't like it at all. Do you know why the people are fat down in Oklahoma, because there's not enough other sources of entertainment no beaches or cool clubs or any of that shit to keep people's mind of just food because that's the only good thing to do down there. The only club i've witnessed seeing was a club called FUSION in tulsa and it's mainly for black people which sucks because they make trouble, there's also no good physcial activities, good gyms around the only two cool things to do in oklahoma is to go to the movies and the mall. Come on people, we need to be a little bit more creative, and find some more options of entertainment we need some theme parks with cool rides, some other things to do, like a national treasure or something else fun instead of just work , eat and sleep.

Robert

5 Jul 07 at 5:23pm

Robert…you've got the Cowboy Hall of Fame, you've got all those man made lakes, and those brilliant theme parks down there in OKC…not to mention all the fast food joints, and the Okie State Fair will soon be here, you know, the fair with more food booths than attractions??

Don't forget your watered down beer either…or if you feel really daring, you can find a church event 7 nights a week…

Paul

5 Jul 07 at 5:33pm

I'm amazed at the stupidity…

Go to Hotmail and see that Oklahomo is advertising nation(world) wide to come and visit Okie Dokie land…yet go to the Daily Oklahomo website and they're advertising trips to Colorado on a web banner…

Guess maybe they can bull sh** the people who've never been to that infested state and convince them that looking at red dirt and eating junk food is a good time and place to spend a vacation??

Hey, Maybe they should advertise "Miss Belvedere" as a star attraction….

Apparently they feel it's better to advertise someplace out of state to the yokels that live there, eh??

Paul

5 Jul 07 at 7:09pm

Well…amid much fanfare, the dam/spillway at Lake Texhoma had water cresting over it today, but only an inch or so, much to the chagrin of the locals and the gathered crowd who came to witness the event. Apparently in 1990 there was 4 feet of water over the top of this thing and it was quite the spectator event..never mind it caused millions of dollars of damage downstream from flooding, those toothless bible thumpers down there had a great time watching it.

Now, the good part…according to people "in the know" on this sort of thing, the design of the system worked "perfectly" according to the Daily Oklahomo news article…in the next paragraph, they talk about how the campsites, sheds, docks, grounds, and toilet houses are so far underwater that the boats are capable of motoring right over this area and not hitting anything..where in the hell did this thing work "perfectly" ??

May the Gods have mercy on the pathetic souls of that crappy state, because nobody else in their right mind would….

Paul

7 Jul 07 at 8:48pm

Now it's the March of Dimes turn to slam Oklahomo…in a recently released report, Oklahomo lags behind "most" other states in screening for 29 catastrophic genetic disorders. 40 other states test for 20 or more of these disorders, but good old Oklahomo only screens for 10 of them…small wonder the population of that state has the mentality of a 4 or 5 generation inbred family…

Of course, a state Department of Health official says that Oklahomo "should" be ready by 2010 to test for all 29, but apparently by the use of the word "should" it means they have no set action plan in place and ready to be implemented….

Paul

16 Jul 07 at 10:02am

Ahhh..wonderful Oklahoma….

Hominy, Oklahomas citizen of the year in 2004 was yesterday sent to life in prison for the murder of a waitress in that town. Such upstanding people down there, eh??

Would it ever be refreshing to see something posted in the OKC newspaper that said something good about that state instead of always having something bad. The only good news articles are from out of state it seems…what does that tell you about the sorry condition of that state??

Somebody please build a 20 foot high wall around that entire state, fill it with water and drown the populace like an unwelcome litter of cats……

Paul

18 Jul 07 at 8:46am

Here we go again….

In Oklahoma, it's OK to shoot a snake with a handgun, law enforcement has the power to do so if the snake is deemed a "hazard". However, in the case of a snake hanging out of a bird house, logic and common sense gets thrown out the door. A police officer took it upon himself (with the blessing of another policeman standing right there) to shoot a snake that was hanging out of a birdhouse with his 9mm service weapon..no biggie until you hear that it was in the middle of a residential section of the town, and the rounds went through the snake (duh!!??) and killed a 5 year old boy just a few yards away standing on a dock with his grandfather. A few yards, not a few hundred yards..mere feet away from this chucklehead….

People like this are allowed to protect and to serve?? People like this are allowed to carry a weapon and are charged with protecting us?? No thanks, I'll protect myself first before I call a couple of Barney Fife's like that….

Paul

8 Aug 07 at 4:57am

Just another thought…

Maybe it's just me, but I find it highly unlikely….

Where else but in Oklahomo would you find a sign on the highway system stating "Failure to pay toll strictly enforced"? Now, where I went to school, that is telling me that they enforce NOT paying the tolls, rather than having them enforce collection of said money…what a wonderful state…

If you are ever driving along interstate 40 through OKC, make sure you look for the billboard that has the word "diesel" spelled incorrectly, it was there for over 2 years and was still there when I left, probably still is….stupid Okies anyway…..

I came to Oklahoma to work. Got laid off after 5 months, and then got sukcer punched by some kid at a bar. I can't wait to leave this God forsaken state, and it's depressed, uneducated hucksters. Everyone is under the thumb of the corrupt system and is too afraid to buckle it. Will Rogers would be ashamed. Can't wait to get to Dallas. Tomorrow. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWW!

PS-No wonder why all the cable is run through COX. Oklahoma does suck!

24 Aug 07 at 3:21pm

Oklahoma is getting fatter ! The new report just released shows that their national ranking for fatness was #13 in 2006 and is now #9, a pretty big (pardon the pun) jump in just one year…..

The article states that 29.4 % of Oklahomon's don't do any physical activity at all, compared to 22% for the national average….

Maybe we should all become heart doctors and move to Oklahomo, business is booming down that way….

I wonder how many of those people down there were reading the article while choking down some nice greasy fast food ??

Paul

28 Aug 07 at 5:04am

Something isn't right…it's been almost 3 weeks since the Oklahomo newspaper posted anything negative about their state…..must be they're all at the state fair, eating all that garbage food and getting fatter..don't want to get greasy fingers all over their keyboards…

OK WHATS WRONG WITH OKLAHOMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have only been there once a very long time ago for a wedding when i was about………………3 i am in 6th grade and we had to do a report on staes and draw our state out of a basket. I ended up with Oklahoma the books and the web say it is a really awesome and beautiful place. plz prove me wrong…………….. if you can.

Sierra

9 Oct 07 at 6:43pm

Hey Sierra, it'll be easier for you to report on here what you found GOOD about Oklahoma, rather than my talking about all the bad stuff thats there…it should take you all of, lets say, one incomplete sentence to cover it……

Paul

9 Oct 07 at 6:51pm

I would like to address Paul. My family came to Oklahoma in the 1830's. Not by choice. But we made a life of it, going to work, raising families, coming to love the land we were born in and other times praying to God to wipe the whole place from the face of the earth. If we were as pissed off as you seem to be, we would have taken action to confront people face to face and change it, or just given up and left there, never to speak of it again. We didn't really have the option of a website where we could safely and from a distance rant and rail about something we were impotent to improve and change. I would like to know what your credentials are that give you the right to criticize Oklahoma. You make a couple of good points that I totally agree with. And know more about than you. The rest of your crap indicates to me that you obviously had a bad experience somewhere in Oklahoma and God forbid they offend you, so you'll show them, you'll post it on a website. Way to go, I'm shaking in my boots. You have no clue as to what the real problems are in Oklahoma and never will. Some of us do, and we'll handle it ourselves. If we need your help, I'll be sure and give you a call. By the way, I can speak about 4 or 5 languages, but just to give you a chance to impress us all with how intelligent you really are, why don't you explain to us what "et al" means, and how it should properly be printed or used in a sentence. I think you can go to any search engine and type that in if you need help. Or just google latin vocabulary. Get a life and don't worry about what you have no intention of changing.

rginn…

what in any of my posts hasn't been factual?? I've gleaned all these tidbits I've posted right from the Daily Oklahomo website, and the facts cannot be refuted.

Fact: You have the worst bridges in the nation.

Fact: Your education system there is ranked 48th in the nation.

Fact: All I've posted in previous posts is easily confirmed.

Fact: The illegals are ruining the trades there.

Fact: Schoolteachers pay ranks in the bottom 5% of the country.

Fact: Starting pay for a corrections officer, and having a family of 4 is below what is considered the poverty level in this country.

You, for somebody who will resolve the problems facing that dread state yourself with no outside help, is spending a lot of time chasing after federal funds to pull you out of the gutter. Maybe instead of speaking 4 or 5 languages you get into politics and try making a difference, because all I see from you is a "leave us alone" posture…

I know far more the problems facing Oklahoma, and the root causes for them than might be expected…perhaps even more than you, O highly educated one….

Paul

26 Oct 07 at 6:34am

Hey Paul, you actually go back and read this site. You're about half-way amusing. I thought you might have a couple of valid points going on, but when you justified yourself by stating your credentials are the Daily Gaylord, you lost me as a fan. (Is it cold out there on the paper route now?) No wonder explaining "et al" was too tough for you! Maybe I misunderstood, but when you talk about your credentials, people believe you are affiliated with the organization you mention. Do you need to go look up the word credentials right now? As far as being forced into what is now Oklahoma in the 1830's, that was called the Indian removal. Cheer up, you got Mississippi, Alabama, et. al., and we got the oil. You're welcome! As far as your list of facts, not bad. Nothing that's not common knowledge. I wonder about a couple of them. How are the illegals ruining the trades there? (Shouldn't you have said here, as we would believe you were actually within the confines of the state borders?) I don't care about Daily Gaylord figures. Nobody with any sense believes anything the Daily Gaylord comes up with. Let's see your personal research. Another thing. I have a family of 4. I need to pay them. I will work hard to become a correctional officer so I can't. Where is the logic in that? Did your guard tell you that? As far as your true facts being easily confirmed, citing the Daily Gaylord doesn't get it with native Oklahomans. I don't need federal funds. Although it is my tax money, so I guess I could use it if I wanted. When I get tired of trying to make an honest living, maybe I'll consider politics. Maybe I could start a war between Gotebo and Miami and give the economy a boost. And I'm sorry if I came across as "leave us alone". Well, not everybody, just you. As far as you knowing far more the problems facing Oklahoma and the root causes, well, you obviously know what you see on the Internet and read in the one paper you deliver. Otherwise, you're still pretty cool and almost on the right track. I do not apologize for my education, but I would if I had depended solely on the State of Oklahoma to provide it. Also, you will notice I typed slow so you could read this.

rginn

28 Oct 07 at 8:19pm

Wonderful!! So glad you responded..

So, because the Daily Oklahoman reports on studies released by organizations like the American Heart association, CDC, ocpathink.org , MSNBC and others then that makes it not true?? Wow.

Native Americans of all people should be concerned with the state of the State, since they're especially prone to have higher rates of poor health than the average white person in that state, and the facts are there to back that up.

I'm not sure where you ever were led to believe that I was affiliated with the one site I linked..perhaps you just assumed a bit too much, and we all know what "assumption" means, right??

Thank you for typing slow for me..perhaps I should have used larger print for this to make it easier for you to see the facts. I'd be more than happy to provide links for you, just so you could see that all the Daily Oklahoman is doing is reporting on various agencies that are releasing facts and reports as far as how Oklahoman's are stacking up against other states, but you probably wouldn't believe it anyway….

I did live there for 3 years, a couple of different towns/cities, and the one steadfast theme prevailed..the entire state is a collective group of bubba's who have no clue what they're missing by living in that pathetic craphole…just FYI..I dealt with my fair share of Native Americans when I was down there..and I'll keep my opinion of those dealings to myself, lest I insult you and maybe cut a bit too close to the bone for your liking.

How's the lottery doing anyway?? Providing a lot of funds for the poor education system down there yet?? Thought so…

Did the get the holes fixed in the crosstown expressway yet?? Or just make a nice temporary patch?? Thought so….

Oh yeah…what news source should I be reading to become truly informed about the state of Oklahoma anyway??

Paul

29 Oct 07 at 6:01am

Just one last thought before I head out for the days work…

How did you find this website anyway?? I came across it by doing a Google search for "Oklahoma sucks"….there were only 1,560,000 hits under these 2 simple words..perhaps you ought to confirm this report by typing it in yourself…or have you already??

Paul

29 Oct 07 at 6:11am

According to the Daily Oklahomo…21 high schools in Oklahoma have been labeled "dropout factories"……

Chalk up another outstanding accomplishment for the State and the education system….

Paul

31 Oct 07 at 3:45am

Yes..Oral Roberts…who just so happens to have his University under investigation, due to some of it's board members and faculty living an inappropriate lavish life off the donations of bible thumpers who send outrageous amounts of money to them…truly upstanding…

A former olympian, who is reputed to make frequent visits to sex shops in her home town…

OU football and football players who had wins taken away from them last season for official misconduct……

Lets not forget the car dealer down there who lined the pockets (illegally) of a football player…I think that was just last year wasn't it??

I also read with interest that the 45 caliber pistol that fired the "We're now a State" shot 100 years ago was stolen the minute it was set down and not closely guarded…

You are a state based on people who shoved the Native Americans off their land..and then there were people who were so dishonest they couldn't even wait for the official start of the free land grab..hence the name "Sooners" of which most of you are all so proud…you pride yourselves for being nothing short of cheaters in order to grab the upper hand…..

You may be no little man, but your smaller than I am…

Guys, the people of Oklahoma make Oklahoma what it is today. The people make the environment. It's a fact that we are not as educated as those from other parts of the country. So what? Every individual in Oklahoma has a choice. We (and yes, I am an Oklahoman) all have a choice in this state. The paths that we pursue are based on many factors. Our parents, our leadership, our peers and our co-workers all play a role in the paths we seek. Although, we all have minds of our own. Those of us who are adults can make our own choices. We can live anywhere in our country as we see suitable. Throughout the USA and the world, we can all educate ourselves in health, education, government, finances, relationships…etc. It's all a matter of wanting to learn. The Internet and the diverse population residing in the USA open our opportunities to learning many things pertaining to our area of residence. Any Oklahoman can move to another state or country if they see it beneficial. It's all a matter of choice. I like to think outside of the box, and I like to think that any US citizen has a choice. Oklahoma has a bad reputation, but any resident of OK has a choice to migrate elsewhere. There are opportunities outside of this state. And there are big opportunities outside of the USA.

Rod

26 Nov 07 at 9:30pm

Yes..the people of Oklahoma DO make Oklahoma what it is today..and the latest FBI statistics say that the violent and property crime rates in Oklahoma City alone are 2 and 1/3 times the national average….2 1/3 times!!!!

Another pleasing stat…..guess crime is "OK" in Oklahoma anyway….you think thats what they meant on their license plates??

Paul

27 Nov 07 at 7:13pm

Paul, I have always thought the "Oklahoma is OK" plate was lame too. They've changed it to Native Oklahoma.

Let's see the link where you have obtained the 2.33 higher crime rate in Oklahoma City vs national average. I've been all over this city and I know there are some bad places. I also know there are some very good places to live in OKC. I am curious to know how we compare with surrounding cities such as Dallas, Little Rock, Wichita and Amarillo.

Yet ANOTHER big title for Oklahoma !!!

Oklahoma is in the bottom 10 "Most depressed States"…

This was a study released by Mental Health America….

In fact, the bottom ten “most depressed” states are: 42) Wyoming, 43) Ohio, 44) Missouri, 45) Idaho, 46) Oklahoma, 47) Nevada, 48) Rhode Island, 49) Kentucky, 50) West Virginia, and 51) Utah.

The “least depressed” states are 1) South Dakota, 2) Hawaii, 3) New Jersey, 4) Iowa, 5) Maryland, 6) Minnesota, 7) Louisiana, 8) Illinois, 9) North Dakota, and 10) Texas.

How is it that Louisiana can score so highly and Oklahomo score so low?? They had Katrina and they ranked well…you lost the Hornets and you're plunged into depression?? And how did Texas fare so well bordering you?? Once again, I'm truly amazed….

Paul

28 Nov 07 at 6:14pm

I remember when I took my step son to his graduation from 8th grade in Oklahoma. Feeling that it was an occasion of great importance to him, and a great accomplishment for him, I wore a suit and tie to the affair. Imagine my surprise when the ONLY other person in that crowded auditorium wearing a tie was the principal.

Most of the "bubba" parents decided fitting apparel for the occasion was a pair of shabby looking shorts, tank tops and a couple clowns even showed up wearing cut off sweat pants..

This was not is some small backwater hick town in Oklahoma, this was in Mustang. Never in my entire life have I witnessed such a lack of consideration toward others as I did that day. I had a bad enough opinion of Oklahoma, but it seems like that day was the turning point that just made it worse…

When the ceremony started, do you think the parents would sit there and shut up?? Nope, they acted worse than the kids did, forget the fact this was the day for the kids to be recognized, this was all about the bubbas and bubbettes whooping it up….please don't tell me this is typical behavior, because if it is, it's the only area of the country where I've seen such blatant disrespect not only for kids, but also toward authority, who were trying very patiently to maintain order and proceed with the ceremony…..

Just one more…according to the Daily Oklahoman…Oklahoma can claim another title…this time it is home to 2 of the worst nursing homes in the nation….since there are 54 nursing homes listed, and Oklahoma has 2 of them, I'd say they have a greater percentage of bad nursing homes than the national average, eh??

According to reports, not only did they receive a scathing review, but a subsequent follow up failed to show any improvement, apparently over the course of six months….

One in OKC, the other in Pawhuska……yet another title I'd be proud to have accompanying my State……

US News and World Report just released a survey of 18,000 high schools across the country who show exemplary performance……guess which state didn't even have one school who made the list??

Fear not Oklahoma, there were a couple other states as well not on there, and I suppose that will be your excuse or justification for not making the grade, but I'd guess anybody that gave a crap about my childs education would be ashamed to see that the education system in that state is a total failure.

18,000 schools…..50 states…..and not one school in your state made the grade……how's it feel??

A new report just released….

The 100 most drunken cities in the country….and wouldn't ya know it….Oklahoma City comes in at 68 and Tulsa at 31st….the worst (most drunken)ranking is number 100..the best(least drunken) is number 1..Tulsa does better than OKC but you've got another title to contend with….and surprisingly…it's another bad title…..

Cheers!!!!

Paul: I ain't forgot you, I just been busy. I have to work and can't spend all my time on the internet. Plus, my comments don't show up here half the time, so what's the point? I do love arguing with you, but maybe I'm far more reasonable than you and I don't write in a hick dialect so I get deleted. One thing I want to point out. You came to your step-son's graduation dressed to the nines. This indicates to me you have pride in yourself and more importantly, pride in his accomplishment. I suppose those other folks said "Oh crap, we got to go to graduation here in 10 minutes" and just showed up. "And you ain't gonna tell us what to wear." I'll tell you this. I wear a cowboy hat from time to time. We had a funeral in the high school gym for a young boy on the track team that died at school. I sat with my son and his teammates, and we dressed good. Honest to God, there was one A-H that left his hat on during the whole service, as the movies tell us we only take our hats off for one thing. Like me, you just point to that guy and tell your kids, "Dont' be like that." Hope your step-son gets a scholarship to OU. Let me know if you need help with that. Later, Paulito.

Yes..I guess "pride in myself" as you put it isn't something that the typical Oklahoman worries about now is it? Dressed to the nines?? Just because I wore a suit and tie?? No…just respectful.

I'm glad you wear a cowboy hat, I'm sure it keeps the sun from baking your brain in the hot Oklahoma weather..your point being what? One day, one idiot wore his hat through a ceremony and you try and compare that to an entire auditorium of idiots acting worse than juveniles??

The Oklahoma mentality sucks…..off to the news to see what bottom of the barrel statistic I can find that Oklahomo ranks 49th or 50th in….

Paul, I'm assuming that you are an American. Oklahoma is part of the USA. By talking bad about your own country, you are talking bad about your own self.

Let me ask you this: If you knew someone who wasn't as intelligent as yourself, would you call them stupid? If you knew someone who wasn't as slim as you, would you call them fat? If you knew a girl who wasn't appealing, would you call her ugly?

You know, when I was very young and immature, I used to call people those names. Now that I am a mature adult, I look beyond those things. Some of the most attractive people I've ever met have been those who are not so pretty.

Let me ask you one more serious question: How does it make you feel to begrudge one of the fifty states of the United States of America? Surely you're not one of those who get gratification in the belittlement of others….are you?

Don't just sit behind a steel wall and talk bad, come out and tell us more about yourself. What makes you better than any person in Oklahoma?

Rod

7 Dec 07 at 10:41pm

Since there seems to be a great interest in me…first lets get to the main issue of those that seem hell bent on defending Oklahoma. What I feel is secondary to what you feel about Oklahoma and what you are doing in order to make it a better place….or are you?? Are you just following the status quo?? Are you consigned to the fact that the state sucks and there's nothing you can do to help resolve the issues??

Please…don't try changing the subject and focusing on me…focus on the fact that the state ranks either at the bottom or so close to the bottom in every category fathomable.

It's not me you have to analyze…it's what makes Oklahomo so bad and seemingly stuck in your rut that needs addressing.

Different political figures, parties etc for the past hundred years have failed to make Oklahoma into a model of anything except despair, bad news, and poor rankings…..

How is it bordering states can have a much better standing than Oklahoma..are we to believe that Oklahoma is an exception to the rule?? Are we to believe that Oklahoma has reasons why they rank so poorly when bordering states do not?? Please tell me…

Paul

8 Dec 07 at 7:28am

Paul, I have wondered the same thing many times. Often I ask the question, "Why is the divorce rate so high in Oklahoma?" There are not many accurate answers. Although, when we look at overall percentages within the US, there isn’t so much difference between the states.

According to the stats I've seen this morning, US has the highest divorce rate – twice that of the second highest (Sweden). So, regardless of what state we live in, we've all got a bad rap on the divorce issue.

Pertaining to the individual states, Nevada is #51 in divorce rate with 9%. I think they have drive-thru chapels in LV. Massachusetts is #1 with 2.4%. Oklahoma is 49th with 6.7%. Correct me if I am wrong, but this translates to 91% 97.6% and 93.3%. Looking at the big picture, there isn't a whole lot of difference between the worst (91%) and the best (97.6%). Although, I've heard people here in Oklahoma say that Oklahomans have a 50:50 chance of divorcing. Statistics are not always real accurate, and they can be manipulated

Being an Oklahoman I have experienced my mom and dad's divorce, a sister's divorce, friend's divorce…etc. I have learned many lessons from the mistakes of others. I encourage people to get to know the people they are going to marry very well before they even think of marriage. I encourage the kids of my friends to use condoms and think before they get real serious in a relationship. I didn't get married until I was 37 and well established. Even then, I analyzed many different aspects of my potential wife. My wife and I attended a 2-day pre cana several months before we became married. A two day Catholic seminar is not much, but it did open some doors for discussion that we would have never considered without attending.

You know, setting an example for others to follow is one of the most important characteristics leadership. With all of the US media advertising divorces among high profile people, it’s no wonder youngsters think of divorce as a common, simple and acceptable solution to ending a man/wife relationship. The freedom of speech and press is great, but really, do we need to advertise so much negativity.

Rod

8 Dec 07 at 9:04am

Wow…..I'm…..touched……by that last post……

I especially enjoyed the comment about setting an example…..the folks of Oklahoma are certainly doing just that…huh??

Wish I could take credit for the following couple of quotes, but alas…they were printed by somebody other than I…but the thoughts of they and I run in a similar fashion:

>>Oklahoma morality? This has to be one of the great contradictions in terms of all time, right up there with 'plastic glass' and, yes, 'military intelligence.' Where, I have to ask, is the morality in not only devising, but perpetuating, actively promoting, and even fu*king defending a system that has successfully produced the 43rd poorest state in the Union, a place that leads the nation in social ills ranging from methamphetimine use to divorce, from teen pregnancy to bankruptcy, from murdered wives to dead babies? And one out of four teenagers would rather die by his own hand than live in Oklahoma."

**Quick Note***—I think you've dropped from 43rd when this was initially printed to a poorer State in the rankings…I think now you may be about 46th or 47th….

>>"You want to know what Oklahoma's problem is? In one word… stagnation. I have never seen so many people who think so much alike in my life. There is no "alternate opinion" here, no one to challenge accepted ideas and stimulate intelligent conversation on them. This whole state reeks of ignorance and apathy, and it is doomed to an existence of economic stagnation until we rid ourselves of the political and philosophical stagnation we have been stuck in for the last century."

And then…the final segment of tonights…found on another site and titled "The Okie Mantra":

>>*"It is a great place to raise a family, and if you don't like it, you can just leave."

And the reason for the posting of the Okie Mantra….another cut to the bone truth about the state…and the people:

>>Conservativism in Oklahoma is a sham, a myth, a hypocritical fallacy that provides nothing more than an excuse for Okies to puff up like toads, verbally berate the people around them, and recite the OkieMantra*, as has been my personal experience with state leaders from Sam Roop, the Chairman of the Tulsa City Council, to staff members of US Congressmen…..

One of the more pathetic aspects concerning Oklahoma is that while the physical geography of the state cannot be altered the natives seem insistent in creating and maintaining poor urban spaces. I am willing to surmise that one of the factors that leads to the poor health and social problems in the state is the absence of sidewalks and the excessive sprawl throughout the state in general and OKC in particular.

One explanation that I have developed is that the "concept" of including sidewalks in local "urban" planning is anathema to Oklahoma machismo. What is not normally including in planning throughout the world is absent from OK. The reason that I reference machismo is due to the fact that the rednecks (97% of the native, Caucasian population) all drive either "bee-ig truhks" or "bee-ig spo-urts u-til-lit-tee vee-hick-lz" (females). I was running the other day through an ostensibly affluent (though still awful) neighborhood in NW OKC and the drivers seemed perturbed that a pedestrian was running next to the curb in the street and still insisted on maintaining their 45 mph speed along the subdivision highway.

I could imagine them saying and/or thinking: "Way-yell, shoot, why's he runnin' and gittin' ex-er-cise. Boy, he need to make soom for my truhk. Go Sooner's, born ray-yed,, bleed ray-yed. Yee-hah."

Another problem with the locals is that they will not permit drivers to merge onto the highway, despite the use of turn signals. This is never a problem in Los Angeles, New York, et cetera.

This is an example of how Okies try to create an abysmal and dysfunctional society.

Searching through the vast expanses of the internet…I've toiled trying to find a statistic where Oklahoma ranks with a low number on something, anything, and I've finally found it….

A ranking of #5….woooo-hoooooo !!! Only problem is….in this case, the lesser the number, the poorer the standing against the rest of the country…..

The US Department of Agriculture ranked Oklahoma fifth worst in the nation in the level of food insecurity in households statewide between 2004 and 2006.

The USDA report said 14.6 percent of Oklahoma's 1.4 million households experience food insecurity, meaning that at times these households lacked sufficient food.

Oklahoma was one of 15 states and the District of Columbia whose food insecurity ranking was above the national average of 11.3 percent of U.S. households, according to the report.

More blight…just think where the national average would be if it weren't for the top 5 states on THAT list…..

I can't believe the amount of whining I'm reading about because of the little ice storm Oklahoma had….

People complaining and "trying to endure" the fact electricity has been out for 2-3 days now….

A few years ago we had one that knocked out power for 28-36 days, snapped over 30,000 power poles in one county alone and left 4 inches of ice on everything..

When we were digging out…I spoke to line crews from all over the country, they'd been to hurricane damaged areas down south..had been to tornado damaged areas…you name it..and they all shared one common theme…they'd never seen devastation like this ice storm caused, no matter the event that led to it…

You guys need to quit whining and prepare for stuff like this…

People were ready for it though, through knowing something like this might happen and from past experience…seems that with the likelihood of tornados and the fact Okie gets major ice storms almost every year that people would be more prepared…I guess it's easier to whine about it after the incident happens though…..

An excerpt from a news article in Oklahoma, from Friday:

>>Clabes said residents should chain their generators to a poll or something heavy in inconspicuous areas, preferably behind their homes.

Just 2 things about this I find amusing….

Why would you chain your generator to a Zogby Poll, or any poll for that matter?? I think I'd rather chain it to a pole or something like that instead of a telephone survey.

number 2..why put it in an inconspicuous place?? To prevent deaf thieves from making off with it?? Will thieves with the ability to hear not go to an inconspicuous place??

Well!! Just for when the power comes back on…..a report today, reported in the Daily Oklahoman on an analysis by the Pew(how fitting) Charitable Trusts Centers on the States says Oklahomo has "one of the worst" one of the worst public pension systems in the country.

Chalk up another one…..and oh yeah..another report today, published in the same newspaper says that Oklahoma is sorely lagging in preparedness for disasters….a small excerpt:

>>Oklahoma has sustained disaster readiness but falls short in protecting healthcare providers from being sued and in the number of elderly who receive flu vaccines, according to a national report released Tuesday that measures states' public-health preparedness.

In its fifth-annual report, “Ready or Not? Protecting the Public’s Health from Diseases, Disasters, and Bioterrorism – 2007,” Washington-based Trust for America’s Health found states have made significant progress but gaps remain.

Face it…..the only good thing about being at the bottom is that there's only one way to go……

One school in Hugo is now going to be closed for months due to mold infestation…a spokesperson said they'd been having high absence rates in both teachers and pupils for years now…..

Around $500,000 dollars for clean up..

"This is a disaster, we need need help"..the main comment…..

"I'm pretty sure we'll find black mold here"….Duh, ya think??

Nothing like poisoning your kids by having a situation go on for years…I'd be pretty sure there should have been some sort of testing done on a school facility to comply with State or Federal regulations?? Where was the testing in this school in Okie anyway??

Paul

21 Dec 07 at 6:00am

The school I mentioned in the above post was only built 17 years ago?? And they've been having high absence rates for "years"?? Sounds like mold was there when it was built, probably due to shoddy building like the rest of the state is known for…oh yeah…did I mention the mold is also airborne in there?? EVERYBODY who walks into that school gets a nice equal helping of crap that'll screw up your life….

I see the Ford Center in OKC is in need of serious repair as well….stained and cracked floors…inadequate bathroom facilities….not enough sinks…..you name it….

21 Dec 07 at 6:29am

Hello.

Okay, so I've read all the comments that you people have left on here and frankly, I think it's totally pointless that you're wasting this much of your time arguing with each other.

I've lived in Oklahoma all seventeen years of my life. I'm not ignorant, diseased, uneducated, obese, or even a high-school drop-out. I think you'll find there are quite a few of us here in this state that aren't. You make it sound as if everyone who lives in Oklahoma is stuck in the 18th century. That assumption is completely false. Please don't generalize and lump all Oklahomans together just because you've had a few bad experiences with some dirty hicks. People from Oklahoma aren't all like that! It's like saying that everyone who lives in California is gay because cities like San Francisco have a heavy gay population, when there are homosexual people everywhere in the United States.

Paul, I can't tell if you're from Oklahoma or not. You seem to switch up the words "here" and "there" quite often. But I'd like to talk to you for a second. On December 2nd you wrote that not one of Oklahoma's high schools was put on the US News' or World Report's survey for academic excellence this year. Well sir, you must be reading the wrong information (or the wrong publications). Edmond North High School in Edmond (where I attend school) was just awarded the No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon of Excellence for its superiority in academics from the national government. So you see, there is some hope in Oklahoma's education after all. You must not be looking in the right places.

I know Oklahoma is a barren wasteland. Most of it isn't that attractive; we don't have the best scenery. But all you people are looking in the wrong places…at the worst in Oklahoma. Not the best.

I don't care if you don't like our state. You're entitled to your opinion (because everyone has one). There are a lot of things I don't like about it too. But why have you been sitting on your butt in front of a computer screen, constantly bashing the state for over 6 months? If you DO live in Oklahoma (which I'm pretty sure you do), go out there and get a job or something. Maybe you can help increase the state statistics for average income. Go get yourself that formal education and raise the stats that way. Or better yet, you could run for governor and make everything fine and dandy. You've seemed to have found and pointed out everything that's wrong with Oklahoma. Why don't YOU fix it?

To Ryan Sims: I'm so sorry that you had a bad experience here. Just be thankful you weren't driving in a heavily-populated state with construction zones like that. It would've taken you MUCH longer. As for the super wind, I'd appreciate it if it would go away too. It's really annoying, especially when it comes to the hair! :)

That's all. Have a good day, and happy holidays.

In 2007, Oklahomo declared the watermelon was the "state vegetable". They wanted it to be the state fruit, but strawberries already had that title, so to not make the watermelon feel left out, they decided it was a vegetable instead and re-allocated it. Making that decision sure has helped the state out of the mess they're in with health and education issues…am glad that Oklahoma is being so progressive in addressing their real problems…

Rod

27 Dec 07 at 9:26pm

Paul—!! Glad to see you're still there and still promoting Oklahoma! You do so entertain me, but being from Oklahoma, perhaps I am easily amused. You seem to have found a soul-mate in Hyde, but I fear Rod may best you yet. You have put so much effort into research on my great state that we should create a new state symbol called "the Official State Guy Who Can't Get Over It". You would rank right up there with the watermelon and mistletoe. I have watched state news, and have been very disappointed to see that so far you have not made a difference. Try harder, or give it up and get a real life. Hyde does have a valid point about pedestrians and vehicles, and I would hope that he would pursue a campaign for a share the road program and proper enforcement of such. However, Hyde, you have missed the mark on Oklahoma dialect. There is more of a tendency to stretch a word rather than convert one syllable to two. For example, "Biiiig Truuuuhk" as opposed to "Bi-uhg Tru-uhk". It's a subtle distinction, but quite often it is the subtle distinctions that make all the differences in life, don't you think? Adios, nos vemos.

I was looking for a website like this (I guess to help relieve my angst and to increase my schadenfreud). Yes, to my eternal shame, I was born and raised in Oklahoma, but to a much more liberal family than most. I find myself somewhat unique as I am a returned Peace Corps volunteer that taught in a school for the blind in Africa. I even married a native and have two wonderful sons by her. I came back due to my family, but I spend most of my time arguing with neanderthal red necks and other assorted provincial morons about their assumptions and provencial rationalizations. I cannot be kind to them as they are so-called adults. Personally, I see the Oklahoma as the drain trap in the middle of the U.S.A. They may be crazy in California, but they are bottom feeders in this place. I am glad I found a spot like this to vent. The last place I vented at was Turn Left. You can see my tribute to Tulsa on that one. Keep up the good work. Maybe you can help at least one neanderthal to evolve. Robert.

A couple of weeks ago, J. Matt made a list of the 10 lamest states in our great Republic. Topping the list was Missouri, which I drove through once. Since I didn't even stop to pee on my way through, I have no way of knowing how bad Missouri actually is, so I'm willing to take J. Matt's word that it sucks. Where I take issue is with the ranking of the state of Oklahoma at number 4. J. Matt has never been to Oklahoma, so he placed it #4 because he couldn't think of a reason to go there. Fortunately, I'm here to set the record straight. I have been to Oklahoma, and nothing could be worse. Oklahoma is unquestionably, by far the worst of the 50 states.

Its no coincidence that of all the 48 contiguous United States, Oklahoma was the one we shunted the Indians into. Here was a land so foul, useless and disgusting that it was fit only for savages. I would hate the white man too if I had to live in that shithole. Oklahoma was the scene of the last great land rush in the U.S. at the end of the 19th century. Meaning that we only bothered to stop and settle in Oklahoma after every decent place in the country had been filled up.

The main problem with Oklahoma is that everything in the entire state is dirty. Everything. The houses are dirty, the stores are dirty, the public places are dirty, and the people are dirty. The dirt is everywhere on everything. Most of the state is given over to dirt. The rest seems to be devoted to cattle ranching, oil drilling, or Fort Sill, the U.S. Army Field Artillery Center. Why build a massive artillery range in Oklahoma? Because there is absolutely no danger of hitting anything of value. My Dad was at Fort Sill when he was in the Army back in the 70s, and the only story I can remember him telling about it was that he and every other guy in his unit went out for a weekend pass and came back with the clap. So the women in Oklahoma are especially dirty. They also play a dirty trick with the beer there. Beer in Oklahoma is 3.2% alcohol by volume, as opposed to 5% in the rest of the country. So you can't even have a decent drink to make the fact that you're stuck in the ass-crack of the country any more bearable.

Some may claim the Oklahoma has some great sports programs at its two major universities. Aside from the fact that Barry Sanders once graced the abominable toilet with his awesomeness, I have to disagree. Aside from being the breeding ground for big, no-talent NBA ass-clowns like Brian Reeves and Eduardo Najera, the state is also home to the University of Oklahoma's vastly overrated football program, which couldn't even beat K-State to win the title of its overrated conference. Then they gave Jason White a Heisman trophy. Years from now, people will say, "Who the fuck is Jason White?" while Larry Fitzgerald and Eli Manning are big-ass stars in the NFL.

All that is horrible about Oklahoma can be encapsulated in one experience. When I was younger, my Dad, my Brother and I took a long road trip out to Colorado. We took our time, stopping and camping, viewing various attractions along the way. In Oklahoma we stopped to spend the night at Lake Thunderbird State Park. Lake Thunderbird proved to be a giant man-made mud puddle in the middle of the Great Plains. The "beaches" were basically just barren strips of red Oklahoma dust that ran down to the red, muddy water of the lake. It must have been a Friday or Saturday evening, because the place was full of dirty, sweaty, stringy little mullet sporting Okies in tank tops and mesh baseball caps and their flabby, slatternly wives and girlfriends trying to get wasted on near-beer. The women were almost all grotesquely fat, with pounds of flab attempting to burst out of their halter-tops and stirrup pants. Their innumerable hordes of half naked children were running barefoot through the dust, knocking over piles of spent beer cans and miraculously not cutting their feet on the shattered beer bottles that littered the beach. They were running in and out of the water, rolling around in the dust so that each child was covered with a fine film of dirt. What made it worse was that there were a bunch of rednecks with powerboats out on the lake, whose idea of a good time was to bring the boats in as close to shore as possible while hooting and shouting obscenities. This put an oily slick down on the top of the water as well as sending churning, viscous waves in to the shore, which the little Okies frolicked in, emerging from the water in a glistening coat of oily mud. It was the ugliest place I've ever been in my life.

The majority of the population in Oklahoma is far behind the rest of the nation as far as their diversity in ways of thinking. Their government officials do not represent the will of their constituants, and the justice system is unjust to all. The police for the most part are abusive. Criminals who are a danger to sociaty are allowed to run ranpant, while non-violient drug offenders are filling up the jails

Why I hate oklahoma

Its people are stupid. Its roads are crap. Its weather sucks. Its people are apathetic. Its bridges fall on cars and kill people. The crime rate is twice the national average. Its people have no teeth and don't care. Its elected officials are a corrupt bunch of cronies. Its people are ignorant. All anybody cares about is college sports (even though 78 percent of the dumb okies never even went to college). Its people are self-righteous hypocrites. Its people are idots. The education system sucks. It has one of the highest divorce rates in the U.S. Nobody gives a damn. The drivers are terrible. Its people are rude and unfriendly. Its people are narrow minded. Most jobs don't pay worth a crap. Its people are bigoted. If you don't have a tattoo your considered weird. Its people are among the fattest, unhealthiest in the nation. Its people are lazy. The road and street signs are horrible. Its people are morons. Nobody has the initiative to make changes for the better. The infrastructure is poorly designed and crumbling. Pigs (okies) don't know pigs (okies) stink. In general, it SUCKS.

Paul, where are you when I need you… Spiderturd, let me adress your rant. I speak as someone who was born in Oklahoma and grew up there and unlike you did not let it bother me. I want to tell you about Ft. Sill. Sheridan Blvd., or the Strip as it is called. Those girls are not from Oklahoma for the most part. I hope your Dad's didn't fall off, and he really should have known better. As for the beer, they haven't advertised it as more than 3.2. Go to the liquor store and buy whiskey if you want something stronger. But I will point out that if you drink two 3.2's, you still have the same problem with the police as if you drank one 6 point. It's a complicated formula, and you can't expect me to explain it since I'm from Oklahoma. Lake Thunderbird. You are dead on. As I said, I'm from here, and a whole lot of us agree with you 100% on your assessment of that place. By the way, we know the roads are crap too. Maybe someday everybody will wake up and storm the state capitol and fix it. One thing more. My dream car is not a PT Cruiser. I don't know who you hung out with or where that came from, but you lost me there. General Lee is not my hero either. The CSA was a bad thing if you were poor. My ancestors fought on that side because they were forced to. They were never proud of that and were glad when the rich man's war was over. You, like Paul, are unable to effect any change in the state of Oklahoma. Nothing you have said here has made a difference in anything. Frank Zappa went on and on about the dirt here, and Pink Floyd said they wouldn't even fly over Oklahoma in the future. (I actually knew those guys) So far, nothing has changed.

I live in Oklahoma too. I have to agree OKLAHOMA SUCKS! I've had this attitude for years. You can drive any direction out of this state and tell by the feel and sound of the vehicle when you cross state lines. I am depressed and I admit, I'm not very smart. The little crap hole school I went to was exactly "a drop out factory". I graduated only because they shuv kids through to keep their numbers in check. Oklahoma has more crack, obeseity, teen pregnancy, cancer, you name it, if its bad Oklahoma is there. We're not even supposed to eat the fish out of the lakes and rivers. The weather, well hell if you like 130 degree temperature changes every six months, its lovely. I'm 42 yrs old and I am worn out. I have had three back surgeries (yes, in Tulsa) each time the good old doctor said he could fix me. Yep, I'm barely able to walk now. We had an out house and no telephone until the late 70's. I have had to work since I was 10 because thats how Oklahoma is. You haul hay, rocks, blocks, wood, build fences whatever there is to survive in this God foresaken state. My shoulders sound like a bucket of bolts and the pain makes me forget my back sometimes. Taxes in this state are rediculous. There is no incentive to do better here, someone WILL take whatever is accomplished and trash it. I've got to get the hell out of here before this fabulous state kills me!!! Someone point me in a dirrection!!! Any dirrection!!!

I'm from Oregon and have a friend in the military who was having a difficult time living at Tinker Airforce Base; so I decided to up and leave Oregon to move here and keep him company. Oh my lord, this "State" of Oklahoma is the single largest trash dump I have ever seen in my life. Yes, freeways are amazingly horrid, as are the ghetto "roads" these dumb human beings drive on. Oh yes, these mentally challenged people shouldn't even be on the these "roads", as no true Oklahoman knows how to drive. Every Oklahoman driver seems to slam on the gas, veer all over the roads cutting people off, die in car accidents when there's the slighest dirzzle of rain… OR… drive so slow and cautiously that they are ultimately killed off by the other highly UNeducated drivers. Oh yeah, and I've noticed the most unecessarily stupid thing… EVERY OKLAHOMAN DRIVES A TRUCK TOO BIG FOR THE ROADS. Why? I could never figure it out… There are no hills, no mountains, no trails, and no jobs Oklahomo has to offer that requires a "big-rig", so I've decided that they just think they're the shit for driving them.

I believe I've been hearing rumors that Oklahoma now has the top spot for obesity in the country; probably in the world, and tten-pregnancy rates are rising to vast levels in high-schools. Either their mother and father are poor black people begging the government for money and robbing stores, or they are big dumb wannabe hicks who sit around all day drinking beer and eating Sonic's (which is tasty, but overrated). Most Oklahomans are 6'4"-retarded-ex-courterbacks who think they're the coolest and toughest guys in the world. They try their hardest to drive big trucks to go "muddin'" (even though there's nowhere to mud other than in a church field), drink beer all day and try to fight eachother. Good job guys, at least you feel like you're the coolest and toughest people on earth. So keep being proud of your ugly land.

I compared Oregon's crime rate to Oklahoma's, and although Oregon is twice as populated whilst being roughly 20% larger than Oklahoma, there were only 86 reported murders in Oregon compared to Oklahomo's 211 or so in 2006. Go ghetto, uneducated black people and angry, drunk retarded fat white Oklahomans!!!

Oh yes, BRICKTOWN; how amazing this roughly 5x5 blocks must be to you retards. What are those blocks filled with? Clubs where the ghetto honry black and fat dumb white people go to be assholes to everyone else and rub their crotches on girls who just want to hang out with friends. It also contains a ridiculously over-priced movie theater (around $35 for two people to see a movie with one medium popcorn and one medium drink!!!) and a tiny little creek where boats take people on a tour of what seems like maybe 4 blocks of "Oklahoma's awesomeness".

I've been all over the place, and only Oklahoma has infuriated me enough to actually write a report about the problems facing Oklahoma for my final at the extremely small Rose State College (where all the semi-intelligent folk hang out and the only place I can talk to people on the same level as myself).

I'm sure by the time I'm done writing this, another 4 people will have been murdered by these dumb WANNABE-HICKS. Who wants to be a hick anyway? Only these retarded Oklahomans so far.

I'm glad I found this site so I can relieve my pain from living here in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do. As my nick says I came here to Oklahomo City from Houston, I was offered a job and I relocated with all of the expenses paid and with a promise of a good salary with a well known insurance company. Well, all of that went okay except that I don't like this city [okc] I hate it I should say and cannot wait to go back to my beautiful houston, TX. You may ask why I moved from a world class city, a city that could well be a country itself, to this wate of land right in the middle of the hillbilly mover alley.

First and most important reason was that I did not have a job at the time and my wife and I were expecting our first baby. I had just quit a job without getting another first, biggest mistake ever, and I got this job just like that..in my first interview a week after quitting my previous job. So I thought this would be a good idea and that I would be back in a year or so.. no it was not. The job and the salary are not bad at all but I cannot stand it here.

I would not finish if I had to name all of the things I hate about oklaHOMO city, roads are horrible and I mean HORRIBLE. And this isn't just in the worst parts of the city.. this is everywhere. Even in the supposedly new and nicest areas you would find them. The city thinks a patch will do and a week later it gets even worse, this city is a joke. It would never compare to a great state like Texas where 95% of highways and the majority of the roads are made of CONCRETE, something this okies don't know anything about and probably never will as I came to find out that the economy here pretty much does not exist. They are to busy trying to push an "english only" law to worry about their economy. I'm tired of writing and will not get in detail but oh my god, these guys sell water down beer.. haha for god sakes a Budweiser or Heineken here is pretty much the same as a budlight. Bricktown is a JOKE, they tried to imitate San Antonio's well known "Riverwalk" only San Antonio brings about 20 million more tourists a year. As far as entertainment, well, there is nothing here other than college football and that is about it. OU is all they know haha. The weather sucks big time too, like I said earlier, oklahoma is right in the middle of the hill billy mover alley and my wife and little girl don't enjoy these alerts going off all the time.

To sum it all up, oklahoma sucks for the above mentioned and for so may more reasons that I cannot think of right now. No wonder all of the native americans were brought here. I'm a Texan and will leave you guys with a phrase that lightens up my every day life living here in this shithole..

"Why doesn't Texas fall into the Gulf of Mexico? Because Oklahoma SUCKS"

Ok folks enough of the amateur hour. Move over and let me take a crack at it for a bit. Oklahoma has so many tornados because God gets a kick out of smoting its residents.

Most recently he she (whatever) smoted the town of Pitcher which is a town of massive sink holes and contamination from lead chat which is a by product of the lead mining industry.

The town became a financial sink hole for the US government which, with the help of our wonderful Senator Inhofe kept pouring money into the area to move the chat piles away from the town cause the little uns kept testing through the ceiling for lead contamnination. Apparently nobody ever listened to the state song, you know it, sing along "Oklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plain" because if they had they would have realized that wind was going stir up the lead contaminated chat pile dust while it was being moved thereby compounding the problem.

Now the govt has come in with a buy out offer for most of the land and you have local officials buying up the worthless land so they can sell to uncle Sam at a profit. I shit you not.

Other notable god smotings – May 3rd 1999 in an apparent vindictive smoting on behalf of the retail industry god smoted the Tanger outlet mall and the 53 discounters that were renting space there. He spared the hotel though so when you drive by you see a hotel sitting next to a concrete slab. Almost destroyed the economy of Stroud Oklahoma and they almost lost thier hospital due to lack of sales tax revenues.

Other notables on Oklahoma. The word Oklahoma is an indian word for land of the red man. Interesting given that 78% of its residents are white.

Governor Opie was originally elected because he supported the right of counties to determine whether to ban cock fighting while his opponent supported a measure to outlaw the practice statewide. Opie carried the counties where cock fighting was a well established form of family entertainment and it was those counties that determined the outcome of the race. Steve Largent was the Republican.

The state of Oklahoma recognizes capital gains for tax purposes only if the stock is from an Oklahoma based company and then only if the stock has been held three years instead of one year as is the case for federal capital gains qualification.

We have an adversarial workers compensation system instead of an administrative one due to the power of a group of self interested workers compensation legislators/lawyers who block any effort at changing the system.

Our attorney general is currently waging a lawsuit with farmers over the amount of chicken shit that Oklahoma farmers can dump on their pasture land. Seems the stuff runs off into the rivers and streams and creates massive amounts of algae which kills the fish. Apparently that is a bad thing?!

There are two types of beer sold here. 3.2 beer is sold in grocery stores can be served cold and is considered non intoxicating (despite the fact you can receive a dui from drinking and driving under its infuence . 6 point beer must be sold in liquor stores and must be sold warm. You cant buy it after 9 pm which is when the liquor stores close. You can however drink on election day now. I guess we just decided that hey we really arent likely to do a poorer job picking legislators drunk than we have sober.

I am stuck in this god forsaken shit hole of a state because my ex wife moved my kid here. Dont come here if you can avoid it.

3 cheers for this God forsaken land. Bet even the Indians don't want it now that they realize what a crappy place it is, and the last 101 years of statehood have made it better than it was…..what a pathetic place to call "home"….

OK, I'm going to jump in here, then leave. But, I've got to say my peace. I've lived in Oklahoma (seven months), and Houston, Texas (44 years). Guess which I like better? Oklahoma almost buried my family. Our family was transferred to, of all places, BARTLESVILLE! And, no, we were not "Phillips", as they still say. I went from a salary in the low $40s to $10/hour in 2005. That lasted, as I've said seven months, and we came back to Houston, the greatest city on earth! Now, it is May, 2008 and I have a $55K/year salary with major benefits, three weeks vacation, stock options, annual bonus, and an office with a window that overlooks the Houston Galleria. Oh, and I'm a woman. How 'bout that!

Linda

20 May 08 at 10:08pm

Congratulations to you and your family, Linda, for not letting Oklahoma bury you and yours. I know they're trying to get more people now in the poverty range(currently 17% of the population) but you were wise enough to see Bartlesville (ugh!!) and then get out and back to where life (and wages) are good…..

It is nice to find a place to vent about Oklahoma with people who know what it's about.

I have to attend training courses in Oklahoma City sometimes two or three times each year for weeks at a time. Currently I am here for a two-month stint, and I am depressed and can't wait to leave.

This is a land hardly fit for human life, like the plains of the Sahel in Africa with its scourges of drought and floods and other natural calamities. The land seems built for failure.

In the summer, the heat is unbearable. If it is in drought, the wind blows dust everywhere and there is risk of grassfires. If it is flooded, then the suffocatingly humid air is full of mosquitoes. The heat is just miserable.

Spring and fall bring the tornadoes and thunderstorms, often hailstorms, sometimes dust storms. I'm not sure why, but the thunder here sounds close and sharp; in the east, thunder sounds muffled in comparison. I will compliment the Okies on their ability to track tornadoes; they have that pegged, maybe the only thing they do right as a whole.

The winter is nasty, too, because of the inevitable ice storms. There is no such thing as salting the roads here, or plowing the snow. It will stay until it melts, even if that means weeks.

Late in the winter or early in the spring, the fools spray-paint the brown grass some sort of bluish-green that looks even worse; I don't know why they do this, but I doubt there is a logical reason.

It seems like there is always a news story about some natural disaster in Oklahoma: floods, tornadoes, ice storms, droughts.

It is an ugly land. The trees look stunted, sometimes gnarled, and they are scattered sparcely like litter throughout the land. The earth is rust red, which might be interesting if it wasn't everywhere the same. The land is pretty flat and empty, save the scattered ugly ranch houses and saggy barns.

Oklahoma City doesn't seem to believe in zoning. There might be an hose factory next to a nursing home next to a pawn shop next to a horse ranch next to a Mexican Baptist church that used to be a Wendy's. Buildings are sprawled out without rhyme or reason; the city stretches for miles, much of it criss-crossed with streets that go nowhere with stop-lights that stop you for the two cars that might come along, or might not. Sometimes there will be a couple of houses with dirt lawns or a lone ratty business among the scrubby bushes on these streets that seem to go nowhere.

The neighborhoods are strange: newish sub-divisions are built next to ratty ranch houses across the street from low-income apartments full of ghetto trash, and all of these next to a farm with chickens and horses. The news helicopters sometimes fly over these subdivisions where some nearby hoodlum has hidden after he robbed a 7-11. I don't know how decent people can live like this.

When it rains hard for more than an hour, the streets are transformed into rivers. Drainage systems? There are occasionally street gutters, though they often lack storm drains. Often there seems to be no drainage at all (unless you count the streets themselves). Sometimes I'll see a storm drain at the top of a rise with a huge pond twenty yards away, so it seems that they do exist here and there, but are poorly designed.

And, yeah, they like to patch the roads rather than fix them. And if they do decide to do a major repair, it takes about three years. They don't work when it rains, it seems.

The drivers, yes, are frustrating. Occasionally there is some damned fool in a raised truck driving like a maniac, but it seems more common that people drive 10 miles below the speed limit, they wait too long when the stop lights turn green, and they don't care about which side of the road they drive on. They are polite and try to let people go at intersections or out of parking lots, but sometimes they do this while holding up everyone behind them. Very annoying.

It is easy to rip on the people here. Yes, they tend to be a bit stupid, and they use bad grammar, and their OU obsession is tiresome. If you are polite, many of them will talk your ear off with their banal chit-chat: the weather this, the price of gas that.

It sounds mean, but I often avoid talking or making eye contact just so I don't have to hear it. They are usually very nice, but there seems to be something disfunctional about many of them, particularly if they are below the age of 40. Maybe the sun cooked their brains a bit too long. I don't consider myself superficial, but their eyes so often seem dull and their jaws too slack; so many of them look shabby to me, even poorly bred. I know that they are poor and that the economy here sucks, but I wonder how much of that has to do with them? Or is it the miserable land itself?

Even the normal-looking, halfway intelligent-looking people seem to have little to offer by way of conversation: it's like their thoughts and opinions must all fit within an Okie mold; they seem shallow and dull to me, even when I agree with them. But most of the Okies are very nice people, and I do feel somewhat guilty for not liking them. Some have ripped on them for being church-goers, but Christianity keeps them stable (if they follow it) and gives them hope in a hopeless land; the most decent among them are the genuine Christians.

I hate being in Oklahoma and I would be happy to never see it again. But I'm an outsider and don't belong here anyway; perhaps it isn't fair for me to condemn it. But it is nice to see that I'm not the only one who hates it.

I will respond only to the last posting from “Ohioan.”

I’ve lived in Oklahoma for 12 years and very often I find myself hating it too. However, let’s put things in perspective.

The everyday climate in central Oklahoma is not really all that different from other places I’ve lived. It’s actually about the same as Philadelphia. It’s certainly not as bad as Houston or D.C. There are the tornadoes and floods, but actually the highest risk of tornadoes nationwide is in central Florida, not here. They are just as bad, probably worse, in Philadelphia when it comes to salting the roads or plowing the snow.

The bluish-green coloring that you see on lawns is not for show; it is a lawn treatment. The color goes away after a couple of days.

It is an ugly land. But have you taken a look at America lately? We seem to have a genius for taking even beautiful places and making them ugly. Take a look at the Florida Panhandle if you want an example.

Oklahoma City isn’t the only city that doesn't believe in zoning. Chicago is exactly the same, maybe even worse. So is Houston.

The neighborhoods are strange, but visit Houston and you’ll see the same thing, probably even more violent contrasts.

“When it rains hard for more than an hour, the streets are transformed into rivers.” This also happens in Los Angeles. In fact, what you get in L.A. are huge mudslides that don’t happen in Oklahoma.

Roads here are bad, but they’re worse in Philadelphia and Detroit.

The drivers in Oklahoma may be bad but they’re much worse in Eastern Pennsylvania. In New York State, they are better, but they’re crazy.

I’ve lived in a lot of places where the average person seems to be a lower form of life: Philadelphia, Detroit, etc. A lot of people in Chicago are obsessed with sports; the difference in Oklahoma is that there are no professional football franchises here. The OU obsession is tiresome. People here come in all varieties; there are lots of stupid, ignorant people here, and even a lot of young people here with high school degrees don’t seem to know much of anything about anything, but this seems to be true everywhere in America. Have you watched some of those reality TV shows? There are even stupid people in New York City: Watch the Tonight Show when Jay Leno does his Jaywalking segment, and he goes into the street and asks ordinary New Yorkers simple questions like what is the name of the Vice President of the United States. Many of them are banal talkers; it’s the way they were brought up. It helps if you think of the whole state as one gigantic small town. It is unfortunate that the local version of politics and the local version of Christianity do keep a stranglehold on the intellects of so many of the native population, but there are places where you can find intelligent life here; just not as many as some other places.

There are some things that are real howlers. The local TV news programs, for example. I’ve lived around the country and seen some bad local news programming, but these guys and gals are right up there with the worst. Day after day, they put on news programs that are truly excellent—-for a town of 5000. It’s the “gigantic small town” mentality. There is a guy on the local NBC affiliate named Galen Culver, who goes around the state looking for subjects for his segment “Is This A Great State or What?” Most of his segments would be laughed off the air if they were broadcast in, say, New York or San Francisco; or people would think it was a gag.

Greetings my fellow Americans. News from the Shart land. This just in. Our state auditor was convicted of taking bribes for some jewelry and trips he and his wife got during the course of their service to the state. Our state auditors defense? He thought his wife paid for them from the family account. Why did he think that? Because he never audits his family account???!!!!! The state auditor used an I didnt know because I never audited my own family accounts defense. Uh. Guilty as charged . Next case. Its been raining here for the last 4 months. With all the religous nuts in this state I am suprised one of them isnt building an arc. Sick of the rain. Sick of the state.

Ha…funny thing actually. I came to this site after searching "oklahoma sucks", which came after searching "new hampshire suck", but am now here to (1/2 ass) defend it. First of all, I was born in Stillwater, OK and have lived in the state off and on for about 12 of my 27 years. Most of you waterheads that are posting negative pointouts have either driven through, visited, or lived here for less than a year. So what are you basing your judgements on? The media? You know, it's been said that negativy makes for good news. I'm sure that we can all agree that it's hard to find anything optimistic on the news. I'm also pretty sure we can all agree that you shouldn't judge a book by the author. Let me explain. A guy writes one disappointing read, but that doesn't mean all of his books are shit. Listen, I've lived in a LOT of states/cities from coast to coast, and Oklahoma is DEFINATELY one of my least favorite, but saying that everyone from Oklahoma is stupid/imbred/dirty/uneducated is just as bad as saying that all people of color are lazy or prone to violence, or all Jews are tight wads…niether of which are true. In fact, I would be willing to say this Oklahoman probably has more education than most of you combined, loves bathing more than the average American, and is NOT the only Oklahoman who's parents aren't related. Which is arguable considering that American family trees may have many branches, but our roots are a big tangled clusterfuck. Alright, back to topic. Things I don't like about Okieland. The view. It's flat, usually brown/red, and covered in dust or abandoned Fords. HOWEVER, Eastern oklahoma offers some of the more appealing land that I've seen out of any state. It's marked with foothills that are covered in plush, green foliage most of the year, and carved with beautiful clearwater rivers. It's not too mountainous like other, just as beautiful, places like New Hampshire/Vermont. It doesn't flood like other areas with gorgeous bodies of water…like Florida who gets frequented by hurricanes (which wouldn't even be so if not for the beloved ocean view) so often that we're running out of names for them. Everyone brings up tornadoes. My wife, being from New England, loses sleep over them. I grew up here and I've never even seen a tornado. Do you know what the odds are of getting hit by something that has an average width of 250 feet, typically lasts for about 10 minutes, and usually travels at a whopping 30mph? I'm not going to do the homework, but it doesn't require a PhD to come to the conclusion that these things don't cover much ground…expecially in comparison to a hurricane. And people do not up and move to another state very often do to hurricanes either. People laugh about Oklahomans' "fuck it" attitude toward tornados, but maybe if you guys got off of your couches long enough to stop watching "Twister" (really very reliable info on Oklahoma weather), you would know that you have about as much of a chance of dying from a tornado as you do falling off a chair. Talk about stupid people. My wife and I briefly lived in New Hampshire (her homestate). Some of the most uneducated, close-minded, racist "rednecks" that I have ever seen reside in New England. Boston is packed with white-loving, spousal abusing, alcoholic dipshits. Northern New Hampshire/Vermont contains some of the most filthy, uneducated white trash on the planet. Who gave them the consent to remove r's from the English language, anyway? BUT I also met some of the friendliest, most interesting people that God (or whoever…no, I'm not Baptist believe it or not) graced us with in New England. AND I'm a HUGE Red Sox fan…not because of the series, but because an old friend of mine went to play for them. Out of all the places I've lived, I love Austin, TX the most…but the rest of that state can go to hell. You couldn't pay me enough to live anywhere else in Texas…and yes, in fact, I have. I lived in "houstonian's" beloved city of Houston for a little over a year and found it overpopulated, impossible to drive in, and VILE. It's the dirtiest place I've ever lived, and I was in the suburb of Sugarland. Oklahoma's dusty as hell, and I hate it. In fact, we all do, but NEVER have I seen as thick of smog, more polluted water, or trash-lined streets/yards as I did in Houston. Okay, let's talk about the education, or lack of, here in OK. TOTALLY agree. We have some of the worst schools in the nation, ranking on a level with that of a 3rd world country in some small towns. But how much of one's intellegence really comes from the quality of school they go to? I'm not saying that it doesn't contribute, but doesn't it really have more to do with how badly someone WANTS to learn and succeed? I graduated highschool in a class of 35. Most of them still live in that tiny town raising livestock or working at the gas station trying to support a handful of children. But not one of them can blame their shortcomings on the school that they went to. I attended the same classes with the same teachers as they did, and went on to attend UT and later OU where I will soon recieve my MD in internal medicine. I'm not bragging. I worked very hard for my education, and I know of a few others in my class who are very successful now. I'm just making a point that no matter how high or low the funding, or average test scores, may be, there will still be people who are happy cashing their government written checks and living in terrible conditions. This is true no matter WHERE you are. The pay here sucks. It's rough to find a job that pays more than $12/hr if you don't have a degree. HOWEVER, the cost of living is SO low (I guess because no one wants to live here) that it really evens out (a little). I had a job that paid over $50k a year in Austin, and when I moved back to Okieland I found that it only paid about $15/hr. Sounded terrible at first, but then I realized. My $1300/mo apartment in Austin was only about $800/mo in Oklahoma. A $250,000 home in Austin is about $75k here. You name it, it was less expensive…tuition, fuel, auto insurance, property taxes, utility bills…you name it. Some will surely say "you get what you pay for", but is it really feasible to pay $175,000 more (and upwards depending on where you live in Austin) for a home just for a prettier view when you look out your window? To some maybe it is that imp
