iPod Wi-Fi

by Keegan Jones 1 Comment

Dear Steve Jobs, I'm sure the next generation iPod is already in the works. If you could do me a ginormous favor and make it wireless, that would be great. If this is already in the plans, please go down the hall and pat the iPod engineers on the back. Otherwise, tell them to get started ASAP!

Seriously, where is a wireless capable iPod?
Think about it, a Wi-Fi iPod would be incredible useful. Why is no one talking about this? I'm sick of the buzz being about a possible video / multimedia iPod. Watching a movie or DVD on a 3 inch screen isn't very practical. iPod's are all about the music. Also, if I see another MP3 player come out that is supposed to be an "iPod Killer", I'm going to throw up. The iPod revolution has already happened. Here are a few of the cool things you could do with a Wi-Fi iPod:

Wireless Syncing
Wouldn't it be nice to sync your iPod without ever sticking it on the dock or dragging out the ol' firewire or USB cable? Everyday I bring my iPod in my backpack to Neubix. A situation I've run into several times is coming home and and realizing that I forgot to sync my iPod with my latest podcasts or music. What if I could tell iTunes a certain time to target my iPod in my backpack and wirelessly sync my music?

AirTunes
Yes, I know AirTunes has already been invented, but I've got a different idea. Lots of people have two computer systems, one at work and one at home. It's a real pain to keep two music libraries identical. What I would like to be able to do is keep all 20GB of music on one machine, then play my music through iTunes wirelessly on another machine. There are several application, like iPodRip, that can play music straight off your iPod. The problem is that I don't want to have to rely on a 3rd party application for this feature. I want to use iTunes, the hands down best music organization tool out there. Oh, and did I mention that I want this to work wirelessly?

Wi-Fi Buds
For me, the iPod makes any task more enjoyable. Cleaning the bathroom, folding laundry, and mowing the lawn are suddenly much more fun with an iPod. The problem is that the darn headphone wire gets in my way. I'm always accidentally yanking the Apple headphones out of my ears. Would it be possible to make wireless ear buds? Could I keep my iPod in my room and listen to music across the hall while I'm cleaning the bathroom? Could I keep my iPod in my backpack and listen to my music while running on the treadmill? Just a thought.

Browse iTunes Music Library on your iPod
This example is a little less practical, but I thought I would mention it for good measure. Let's say that you were on a trip, staying in a hotel with Wi-Fi and don't have a laptop. Wouldn't it be cool to be browse the iTunes Music Library on your iPod and download music? The interface for the iTMS on the iPod would be text based. You could search the library using the scroll wheel to find letters and type in band names. It would be nice if it had the "guess what you are trying to type" feature that some cell phones have when you are text messaging. When you got home from your trip you would sync your iPod to do a "reverse sync" and copy your new music back to your library. This would be similar to when you rate songs on your iPod and it copies the ratings back over on the next sync.

These are just some ideas that have been floating around my head lately. What features would you like to see on the next generation iPod?

You must be really old fashion because ipod touch and iphone have been made and you can do that with those. It is very easy everybody knows how to do that now.
